Surf competition returns to Saltburn-by-the-Sea
Saltburn-by-the-Sea is getting ready for another exciting day of competitive surfing, with a surf competition taking place on the Yorkshire coast in September 2026.
Saltburn has a strong surfing community and is one of the best-known surf spots on the North East coast. When the conditions are right, the beach can produce some excellent waves for both longboarders and shortboarders, making it a great setting for a surf competition.
I’ll be heading down to Saltburn to photograph the competition and capture the surfers, waves and atmosphere from around the beach.
Competition date: [ADD DATE]
Location: Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire
Event: Saltburn Autumn Open 2026
Organiser: Saltburn Surf Shop
What to expect at the Saltburn surf competition
The competition will bring surfers together at Saltburn to compete in the waves and test their skills against other surfers.
Competitive surfing at Saltburn can be particularly interesting to photograph because conditions can change quickly. Tide, swell, wind and wave direction can all have a big effect on the competition.
Depending on the conditions, the surfers may have to deal with everything from smaller clean waves to more powerful surf.
For spectators, this makes the event worth watching even if you’re not a surfer yourself.
Surfing at Saltburn-by-the-Sea
Saltburn is one of Yorkshire’s best-known surfing locations and has been part of the regional surf scene for decades.
The town has a dedicated surfing community, surf school and facilities close to the beach. Saltburn Surf School, for example, has been providing surfing instruction since 1983.
The beach can offer good conditions for different levels of surfer, although the quality of the waves depends heavily on the swell, wind and tide.
For a competition, getting the right conditions can make a huge difference.
Who will be competing?
The competition is expected to attract surfers from Saltburn and the wider Yorkshire and North East surfing community.

If you know of a surfer taking part, let me know and I can add their name to the page.
Where to watch the Saltburn surf competition
One of the great things about watching surfing at Saltburn is that you can get a good view of the action from around the seafront.
The beach and promenade provide several places where spectators can watch the surfers without getting in the way of the competition.
The elevated areas around Saltburn can also make useful viewing and photography positions because they allow you to see the waves developing and follow surfers through their rides.
If you’re taking photographs, arriving early is worthwhile so you can find a good position before the competition gets underway.
Photographing the Saltburn surf competition
I’ll be photographing the competition from around Saltburn, concentrating on the action in the water as well as the atmosphere on the beach.
Surf competitions are one of my favourite things to photograph because there is always something happening.
I’m particularly interested in capturing:
- Surfers riding waves
- Turns and manoeuvres
- Spray and wave action
- Surfers waiting in the lineup
- Paddle-outs
- Competition heats
- Spectators watching from the beach
- The atmosphere around the event
- Behind-the-scenes moments
- The changing conditions throughout the day
Rather than photographing just the winning rides, I want to capture the whole story of the competition.
My Saltburn surf photography
I’ve photographed surfing around the Yorkshire and North East coast, including Saltburn.
As a surfer myself, I enjoy being around the lineup and photographing the local surf community. I’m probably better at photographing waves than riding them, but being in the water and around other surfers gives me a good understanding of what makes a good surfing photograph.
I’ll be adding photographs from the competition to this page after the event.

Planning to watch the competition?
If you’re travelling to Saltburn to watch the competition, remember that surfing events are dependent on the conditions.
Surf competitions can sometimes be moved or adjusted because of wave conditions, weather and safety.
It’s therefore worth checking the organisers’ latest information before travelling.
You can also check the local surf conditions and forecast before setting off.
