If you surf in Yorkshire, Surfline can be a really useful tool for deciding where to surf, when to go and what equipment to take. But it can also be confusing when you first start looking at wave height, swell direction, period, wind and tide.
The important thing to remember is that Surfline is a forecast, not a guarantee. Yorkshire’s coastline is affected by rapidly changing wind, tides, swell direction and the shape of individual beaches.
Surfline currently provides forecasts for Yorkshire locations including Cayton Bay, Saltburn, Scarborough, Whitby and Filey, making it particularly useful for comparing different beaches before you leave home.
The Five Things I Look at First
When checking Surfline for a Yorkshire surf, I normally concentrate on:
- Surf height
- Swell direction
- Swell period
- Wind direction and strength
- Tide
Don’t simply look at the big number beside the surf rating.
A forecast saying 3–4ft does not automatically mean every beach will have 3–4ft waves.
1. Surf Height – How Big Will the Waves Be?
Surfline gives you an estimated breaking wave height at the beach.
For example:
- 0–1ft – Very small
- 1–2ft – Small
- 2–3ft – Fun small surf
- 3–4ft – Good size for many surfers
- 4–6ft – Solid Yorkshire surf
- 6ft+ – Serious conditions at many beaches
These are only rough guides.
A 3ft forecast at one Yorkshire beach can look completely different from a 3ft forecast somewhere else.
Beach shape, tide, swell direction and wind can all make a major difference.
Surfline describes surf height as its estimate of the breaking waves you should see at the beach, calculated from the swells affecting that particular spot.
Remember: Surf height isn’t the same as swell height
This is one of the most important things to understand.
You might see:
Surf: 3–4ft
but underneath it:
Swell: 4.6ft @ 8 seconds
Those are different measurements.
The swell is the energy travelling through the ocean. The surf height is what Surfline expects that energy to produce when it reaches the beach.
2. Swell Direction – Which Way Is the Swell Coming From?
For Yorkshire, swell direction is extremely important.
You might see something like:
NNE 14°
This means the swell is travelling towards the coast from the north-northeast direction.
The direction of the swell helps determine which beaches will receive the most energy.
Yorkshire’s coastline isn’t simply one long beach facing exactly the same direction. Small changes in coastline orientation can make a surprisingly big difference.
A useful Yorkshire rule
When a northerly or northeasterly swell is coming into the North Sea, check several beaches rather than assuming everywhere will be the same.
For example, compare:
- Saltburn
- Whitby
- Cayton Bay
- Scarborough
- Filey
Surfline itself allows you to compare nearby spots on the forecast pages.
3. Wave Period – One of the Most Important Numbers
Wave period is the time between waves in a swell train.
You might see:
2.5ft @ 7 seconds
or:
4ft @ 12 seconds
The second swell contains considerably more energy even though the difference in height may not look enormous.
Rough Yorkshire guide
4–6 seconds
Usually local wind swell.
Can produce short, messy, closely spaced waves.
7–9 seconds
A useful range for many Yorkshire days.
Can produce decent surf when the direction and wind cooperate.
10–12 seconds
More powerful swell.
The waves can have more push and better shape.
13 seconds+
Long-period swell.
These swells can carry significant energy and can behave very differently from ordinary short-period North Sea wind swell.
Surfline’s swell graphs show swell height and period separately, with longer periods indicating more widely spaced swell energy.
Don’t make the mistake of only looking at wave height
A 3ft @ 10 seconds swell can be much more interesting than a 3ft @ 5 seconds wind swell.
4. Wind – This Can Make or Break a Yorkshire Session
For Yorkshire surfing, wind is often just as important as the swell.
Surfline normally shows:
Wind speed
and
Wind direction
You may see something like:
8 KTS WNW
That means wind from the west-northwest at 8 knots.
Offshore
Offshore wind blows from the land towards the sea.
It can help clean up the wave faces and produce better-shaped waves.
Onshore
Onshore wind blows from the sea towards the land.
It can create chop and make the surf messy.
Cross-shore
Wind travelling across the beach can fall somewhere between the two.
However, don’t assume that the same wind direction will have exactly the same effect at every Yorkshire beach.
The coastline bends, and local geography can change the wind significantly.
Surfline also provides local wind charts designed to show smaller-scale effects such as coastal wind patterns and eddies.
5. Don’t Forget the Gusts
Look carefully at the wind speed and gusts.
For example:
10 knots
Gusts 18 knots
That is very different from:
10 knots
Gusts 11 knots
Strong gusts can make conditions considerably messier.
Surfline specifically highlights significantly stronger gusts because they can negatively affect surf quality.
6. Tide – Yorkshire Beaches Can Change Dramatically
The tide is another major part of the puzzle.
Surfline gives you the tide information alongside the forecast.
Don’t simply assume:
“Low tide is always best.”
It depends on the beach.
Sandbars move.
Banks change.
Reefs work differently.
Some areas can produce better waves at higher stages of the tide while others may work better lower down.

7. Use the Surfline Rating – But Don’t Trust It Blindly
Surfline uses ratings to give you a quick indication of expected conditions.
You might see:
POOR
POOR TO FAIR
FAIR
and other ratings.
They’re useful as a quick starting point.
But don’t let the colour or rating make the decision for you.
A Fair forecast might be great for a beginner on a bigger board.
The same forecast might be disappointing to an experienced surfer looking for powerful waves.
Your ability and equipment matter.
8. Compare Yorkshire Beaches
This is one of the best ways to use Surfline.
Instead of opening one beach and immediately deciding whether to surf, check several locations.
For example:
Saltburn
Check the swell direction, period and wind.
Whitby
Compare the forecast against Saltburn.
Cayton Bay
Look at the size, period, wind and tide.
Scarborough
Check both North Bay and South Bay where forecasts are available.
Filey
Use it as another comparison point.

9. A Yorkshire Example
Imagine Surfline shows:
Cayton Bay
3–4ft
NNE swell
8 seconds
W wind
Light wind
That immediately tells you much more than simply seeing “3–4ft”.
You know:
- There is a reasonable amount of surf.
- The swell is coming from the northeast.
- The period is reasonably short.
- The wind direction may help clean up the waves.
- It is worth checking the tide before deciding when to paddle out.
Now imagine another beach is showing:
2–3ft
but has:
NNE swell
10 seconds
and better wind.
I wouldn’t automatically choose the 3–4ft forecast.
The smaller forecast could potentially produce better-quality waves.
10. Learn to Read the Swell Graph
Surfline’s advanced forecast allows you to look at individual swells.
You may see several different swell lines.
For example:
Primary swell
NNE – 4ft @ 9s
Secondary swell
E – 2ft @ 5s
This tells you that more than one system is affecting the surf.
The primary swell is the one Surfline considers to be contributing the most to the calculated surf height at that spot.
This becomes particularly useful when Yorkshire has a mixture of:
- Local wind swell
- North Sea swell
- Longer-period swell
- Different swell directions
11. Use the Charts to See What’s Happening Offshore
Surfline’s Charts section is extremely useful once you understand the basics.
The current Surfline Charts include:
- Wave height
- Wave period
- Wind speed
- Wave energy
You can move through time and see how the conditions are expected to develop.
For Yorkshire, I would particularly watch:
Wave Height
Is a swell building or fading?
Wave Period
Is the swell short-period wind swell or something more organised?
Wind
Where is the wind coming from?
Wave Energy
How much energy is actually arriving at the coast?
12. Don’t Get Excited by a Big Purple Blob!
If you’re looking at Surfline’s charts, you may see large areas of colour showing significant wave height.
A big area of large waves offshore doesn’t automatically mean your local beach will be pumping.
You need to ask:
Is the swell heading towards Yorkshire?
Is the coastline exposed to it?
What is the period?
What is the wind doing?
What is the tide doing?
Surfline’s charts are designed to help you follow swell energy from its source towards the coast and identify which areas are most exposed.
13. The Surfline Camera Is Your Reality Check
This is probably the most important tip in this entire guide.
Look at the camera.
If Surfline has a camera covering the beach, use it alongside the forecast.
The forecast might say:
3–4ft – Fair
But the camera might show:
- Messy wind
- Weak waves
- Poor banks
- Lots of water movement
- Better conditions than expected
- Or much worse conditions than the forecast suggests
The camera gives you a view of what is actually happening.
Surfline’s current-condition information combines forecast/model information with observations where available, including live wind stations.
14. Check Surfline Before You Leave – Then Check Again
Don’t check Surfline once at 10pm and assume the forecast will be identical the next morning.
Forecasts change.
Storm tracks change.
Wind forecasts change.
Swell timing can change.
I would check:
The night before
Look for the general pattern.
Early morning
Look at the latest forecast.
Before travelling
Check the camera and wind.
When you arrive
Look at the actual sea.
Then make your final decision.
My Simple Yorkshire Surfline Routine
If I were checking Surfline for a Yorkshire session, I’d do this:
STEP 1 – Look at the swell
Where is it coming from?
STEP 2 – Check the period
Is it short-period wind swell or a more organised swell?
STEP 3 – Check the surf height
How big does Surfline expect the breaking waves to be?
STEP 4 – Check the wind
Direction first, then speed and gusts.
STEP 5 – Check the tide
Find out what stage of the tide you’ll actually be surfing.
STEP 6 – Compare beaches
Don’t assume the closest beach is the best option.
STEP 7 – Look at the camera
See what is actually happening.
STEP 8 – Check again before paddling out
Conditions can change surprisingly quickly.
Surfline Isn’t a Crystal Ball
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is treating Surfline as an exact prediction.
It isn’t.
Surfline uses sophisticated forecasting models, including its LOTUS surf forecasting system, but local beaches can behave differently from the model prediction.
Think of Surfline as giving you the ingredients.
Your job is to put those ingredients together.
For Yorkshire, that means learning how:
Swell direction + period + wind + tide + beach shape
combine to create the waves you actually see.
The more you watch Surfline and then compare the forecast with what you see at the beach, the better you’ll become at predicting Yorkshire surf yourself.
The Golden Rule
Don’t ask “How many feet is it?”
Ask:
What is the swell doing, where is it coming from, what is the wind doing, what is the tide doing, and which Yorkshire beach is going to make the best use of it?
That’s when Surfline becomes much more useful.
