The second forecast might have bigger numbers but much worse actual surfing.

If you are planning a surf trip, start looking several days beforehand.

Don’t become too attached to the initial forecast.

Instead, watch how it develops.

Around 5–7 days out

Look for the possibility of a swell.

Around 3 days out

Start paying more attention to swell direction, period and wind.

The day before

Look closely at the predicted conditions and tide.

On the day

Check the latest forecast, webcams where available, weather conditions and — most importantly — what is actually happening at the beach.


Learn to Read the Sea, Not Just the App

One of the best things you can do as a surfer is gradually learn to make your own assessment.

Before entering the water, spend a few minutes watching.

Look for:

  • Where the waves are breaking
  • How big the sets are
  • How often the sets arrive
